A creative project progress log helps you remember decisions and versions while the final result is still taking shape. It does not have to become a full daily diary. A few notes about your aim, what you tried, what changed and where to resume may be enough. Keeping this record can make it easier to return to a project; it does not guarantee the quality or speed of the work.

Four questions for each entry

  1. What am I trying to do? Describe today’s task or question in one sentence.
  2. What did I try? Record an observable action, such as placing three color options side by side.
  3. What changed? Note a decision, constraint or question that came up.
  4. What comes next? Choose one small action for the next session.

A short example

For a cover design: “Aim: find a readable title arrangement. Tried: compared two type sizes on scrap paper. Noticed: the smaller version was harder to read beside the image. Next: test the title at actual size without the image.” Instead of writing “today went badly,” describe what you saw and what decision follows.

Track versions without collecting clutter

Give each experiment a simple name or number and note how it differs from the previous version. If you keep a photo, sketch or draft, add a date and short caption. You do not need to record every tiny adjustment; focus on changes that explain a later choice. If you set an idea aside, note why so you can see the context if you revisit it.

Review before you stop

Mark any open question or obstacle and list the file or materials you will need next time. If the project has paused, find the last clear point and choose a modest restart, such as opening the draft and reviewing one section. Match the log to the scale of the work: a short project may need a few lines, while a longer one might benefit from a page for decisions or references.

Common questions

Should I write every day?

No. A note after a work session or important decision can be enough.

Should I keep every version?

Keep versions only when they help you continue or explain a choice. There is no universal rule.
